2021 Speed Session Bundle: Advocacy

This bundle is worth 0.1 CEU and contains the following three speed sessions from NRPA's 2021 annual conference:

Advocacy for Forgotten Communities Through Recreational Programming (Session 002)
This session will depict methods in which recreation professionals may address the needs of the homeless community through solution-driven recreational programming using in-depth community engagement techniques, community needs assessment tools and developing program partners. Through the intersection of social services and recreation programming it's possible to revitalize parks that serve a predominantly homeless population. This session will showcase how the presenter's department was able to leverage partnerships with community organizations, secure a budget for operational costs, and develop a Park Advisory Board. All of which have generated social integration and offers community members a sense of pride, ownership and inclusion. Attendees will gain tools to promote accessible programming for an underserved population, utilize public open space for community benefit, and offer fair access to high-quality recreational opportunities will be shared. 

Learning Objectives:

  1. Implement community engagement to identify gaps in recreational opportunities for people experiencing homelessness. 
  2. Cultivate relationships with community organizations to bridge the gap of services. 
  3. Asses operational needs, in order to develop a budget for your homeless park.


Exploring the Conditions That Promote Socio-Demographic Mixing at Urban Parks (Session 010)
Attendees will learn about socio-demographic mixing in park settings and will become familiar with strategies to increase mixing between people of diverse backgrounds. Applications to practice will focus on how attendees can increase a sense of welcome and belonging at their parks, enhance personal and community ownership of the parks, and more effectively engage communities in planning and design of parks. 

Learning Objectives:

  1. Communicate the importance of socio-demographic mixing in urban parks. 
  2. Understand the concepts which positively correlate to socio-demographic mixing in urban parks. 
  3. Implement strategies to increase socio-demographic mixing in urban parks.


How to Involve Individuals With Physical Disabilities in Your Recreation Programming (Session 013)
This session will provide concrete strategies for including individuals with physical disabilities in programming. Foundations/grants that assist with purchasing adapted equipment will be shared. Time will be scheduled to answer questions about specific programming that attendees have and how to make it inclusive. 

Learning Objectives:

  1. State why inclusion is important and list at least six different ways to make inclusion happen. 
  2. Identify funding agencies that can help with increasing inclusive programming and/or adapted equipment.  
  3. Provide specific answers to your inclusive programming questions.

Trish Delgado (she/her)

Trish Delgado has worked for the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks for over 20 years. She has been heavily involved in the revitalization of the Skid Row parks and its continuous maintenance.

Angela Williams (she/her)

Homeless Liaison and Coordinator

Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks

Angela Williams serves as the City of Los Angeles, Department of Recreation and Parks Homeless Liaison and Coordinator. She is an experienced professional working with elected officials, non-profit organizations and community advocates to address Los Angeles burgeoning homeless crisis. She has years of diversified experience working in the public sector and is dedicated to servicing her community. She has delivered vital resources and services to people experiencing homelessness through recreational programming, community events and essential partnerships. Angela has also developed an award-winning recreational program that reflected the needs of the community and cultivated community support and trust. Angela received her Masters of Urban Planning with a focus in Community Development from the University of Southern California (USC). This is Angela's first time attending and speaking at a NRPA Annual Conference.

Andrew Mowen, PhD (he/him)

Professor

Pennsylvania State University

Dr. Mowen is a Professor in the Department of Recreation, Park and Tourism Management at Penn State. Formerly the Manager of Research and Evaluation at Cleveland Metroparks, his research focuses on park agency financing and assessing the value of parks and recreation to local officials and the communities they serve. Dr. Mowen is currently working with a team of researchers and community organizations to assess the outcomes of urban park renovations and citizen engagement in Philadelphia. He was the 2018 recipient of the Theodore and Franklin Roosevelt Award for Excellence in Recreation and Park Research and the 2021 recipient of Penn States George W. Atherton Award for Teaching Excellence.  He is a member of the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration as well as a Fellow of the Academy of Leisure Sciences.

Samantha Powers, PhD (she/her)

Graduate Student

Dr. Powers is an assistant professor in Recreation, Park, and Tourism Management at Penn State Abington. She studies the intersections of urban park management and social justice, with a focus on interracial contact between park users. 

Margaret Stran (she/her)

Associate Director of Adapted Athletics

University of Alabama

Dr. Stran is Associate Director of Adapted Athletics at the University of Alabama. She has spent the past twenty years getting individuals with physical and intellectual disabilities active. In addition to her activities, Dr. Stran has been sharing what she does at conferences and events in the US and abroad since 2000.
