Equity in Practice - What to Expect?

At NRPA, our place in creating change and supporting communities is by helping park and recreation professionals meet emerging and future challenges, with a special focus on those based on differences. To develop a plan for diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) for the field, we spent last year connecting with and surveying the field to understand where agencies and state affiliates are — what work is being done, who is leading the work and what support NRPA can provide. Join this talk, as we review lessons learned from that process, discuss what equity means across our core competencies, and introduce NRPA’s new “Equity in Practice” member opportunities for 2022 and beyond.  

Objectives:

  1. Audience will know the definition of equity.
  2. Audience will understand the role of parks and recreation in furthering equity.
  3. Audience will be able to identify additional DEI professional development opportunities through NRPA’s Equity in Practice offerings.

Shalini is the Senior Manager of Education - Diversity, Equity and Inclusion for NRPA. She is a passionate Educator who is focused on melding her love for parks with her commitment to social equity. Shalini believes that innovative education and inviting dialogue can build a shared investment in ensuring access to parks for everyone. She has been working on issues of equity for over 10 years in a variety of settings, including higher ed, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations. She is particularly passionate about the intersection of gender-based violence and racial equality. Shalini holds a Masters in Education and an Education Specialist degree in Counseling from the University of Florida.
