Our County: An Innovative Sustainability Plan for Los Angeles County

Speaker Gary Gero, Los Angeles County's chief sustainability officer, will discuss the vision for the first-ever comprehensive sustainability plan for Los Angeles County, the most populous and one of the most diverse counties in the United States. Next, speaker Christopher Rhie, lead consultant at BuroHappold, will discuss the strategies for creating a multi-disciplinary team and outreach strategy that highlighted park and open space advocates along with community members and other stakeholders. Lastly, Mia Lehrer, founder and president of Studio-MLA, will discuss how their experience as local open space advocates helped inform strategies to protect more natural land, encourage nature-based resiliency solutions, and increase access to open space. 

Learning Objectives:

  1. Learn about the close relationship between parks, open spaces and sustainability. 
  2. Understand sustainability plans as a valuable avenue to advocate for parks. 
  3. Find other like-minded advocates through the sustainability planning process.

Mia Lehrer, founder of Studio-MLA, has led the design and implementation of ambitious projects including the Hollywood Park Racetrack redevelopment and its new LA NFL Stadium, the LA County Natural History Museum Gardens, Vista Hermosa Park, and many Los Angeles River-related projects. Recent accomplishments include serving on Obama’s Fine Arts Commission and receiving ASLA's LaGasse Medal.

Chris develop sustainable infrastructure, land use, and climate policy frameworks for local governments, universities, and non-profit organizations. He was the energy project manager for New York City’s Roadmap to 80×50 and led the consultant team for the LA Countywide Sustainability Plan – widely recognized as the nation’s boldest regional sustainability strategy.

Chief Sustainability Officer

Los Angeles County

Gary was appointed LA County's first Chief Sustainability Officer in November 2016. He previously served as the President of the Climate Action Reserve and he serves as the Vice-Chair of its Board of Directors. He previously serves as the Assistant General Manager for the City of Los Angeles Environmental Affairs Department, and he also managed renewable and energy efficiency programs at LADWP.
