2021 Speed Session Bundle: Programming

This bundle is worth 0.1 CEU and contains the following three speed sessions from NRPA's 2021 annual conference:

Community Recreation/Fitness Centers Functioning as Industry Stimulator and Incubator (Session 007)
This session will provide data analytics that demonstrate how a community recreation/fitness center renovation and expansion can function as a fitness industry stimulator and a business incubator. One year after completion a residential assessment determined that the overall fitness market is larger than the national average, and that residents select to purchase multiple memberships across the market.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Articulate how a community recreation/fitness center functions as an industry market stimulator.
  2. Articulate how a community recreation/fitness center functions as a business incubator.
  3. Explain the value of developing a co-opetition strategy with industry business stakeholders.

Pandemic Proof Programming: Host Your Own Film Festival! (Session 022)
Lights, camera, action! Believe it or not, your agency can host its very own Film Festival next year! Imagine...getting out of a limousine to flashing lights and walking a red carpet for professional photos before entering a theater to watch your original film on the silver screen! This is an experience you can bring to your community with relative ease! The park and recreation team behind the Southeastern Pennsylvania Teen Filmmaker's Showcase will discuss how to identify event partners, create a film review committee and tricks of the trade to make your event a success! Started in 2018, the Showcase has grown into a three-day event that attracts thousands of submissions from across the globe. Film festivals also are technology-driven adventures and can be successfully implemented in a COVID-19-sensitive programming landscape. Film festivals are not only fun, but also important, providing opportunities for artistic expression and communication in a socially equitable environment.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Articulate a road map for successfully implementing a municipal-led film festival, associated goals and achievable outcomes.
  2. Identify potential industry-specific public and private partners.
  3. Understand how film festivals support larger community-wide art programs and initiatives.

Exciting Programs on a Shoestring Budget (Session 009)
This fast-paced session will include complete details on fun events that will engage your community in the parks and on the department's social media sites. These programs are virtually free to produce with minimal staff. Can your community solve a murder where your staff is the prime suspect? Find out with a Park Edition of CLUE. Learn how to create a Positivi-tree that gives residents a place to share encouraging words. Partner with the local police department to catch the Grinch before he ruins Christmas. Organize an online cupcake war, create outdoor art with yarn bombing and so much more!  Links will be provided containing materials needed to roll out these events as early as next week!

Learning Objectives:

  1. Engage their community with activities that consistently draw residents into the parks.
  2. Develop techniques to increase traffic on the department's social media sites.
  3. Produce exciting free events requiring minimal staff and expenses.
