The CPSI Preparation Course includes 10 online modules which will help prepare an individual to take the Certified Playground Safety Inspector Examination. The course provides rich, in-depth analysis of ASTM standards related to playground safety focused on the process of safety inspection from design, through audit and inspection, to maintenance and risk management practices. The course also provides learners with scenarios to apply their understanding of this material.

Once registered, you will have access to the course for 180 days. The course is worth 1.2 CEU upon completion of all course components.

Section 1: CPSI Course Introduction
Begin self-paced component package.
Begin self-paced component package. The purpose of the Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI) Course is for those certified to be able to: 1. IDENTIFY potential hazards on public playground equipment and playgrounds 2. RANK the hazards according to injury potential 3. APPLY the knowledge needed to remove the hazards and establish a system of inspections. This section will provide an overview of the program along with a roadmap of the topics that will be discussed. The desired outcome is that you become a CPSI capable of establishing the basics of a sound risk reduction program, a system of repair, retrofit or removal of hazardous equipment, and a routine inspection system for your own agency or playground owner-client.
Section 2: Scope
Begin self-paced component package.
Begin self-paced component package. After completing this section, you should be able to: • Inspect a playground for hazards using the ASTM standards and CPSC guidelines • Identify the various age ranges for users covered by the standards • Discuss the general playground considerations identified by CPSC • Understand the processes and problems associated with various materials used in the manufacture of playground equipment.
Section 3: Performance Requirements
Begin self-paced component package.
Begin self-paced component package. After completing this section, you should be able to: • Identify and discuss the various performance requirements associated with playground hazards that cause death and seriously debilitating injury • Identify the hazards associated with the four major causes of death in a playground environment • Identify and discuss the proper testing methods used to evaluate bounded openings, protrusions and entanglements to determine if they are hazards • Identify and discuss the proper testing methods used to evaluate crush and shear and suspended hazards • Identify and discuss the requirements for access and egress on play equipment.
Section 4: Equipment Requirements
Begin self-paced component package.
Begin self-paced component package. After completing this unit, you should be able to: • Identify and discuss hazards associated with the specific types of equipment covered in this section • Recognize the requirements for free-standing, attached, spiral, tube, and embankment slides • Differentiate between a slide non-entanglement zone and slide clearance zone • Understand the requirements for vertical and horizontal rotating equipment, seesaws, spring rocking equipment, balance beams, sliding poles, and trolley and track rides • Understand the requirements for roofs and signage.
Section 5: Playground Site Specifications
Begin self-paced component package.
Begin self-paced component package. After completing this unit, you should be able to: • Know the terminology needed to select, maintain and inspect surfacing materials • Understand testing methods for surfacing in the lab and out in the field • Identify fall heights for various playground equipment • Explored surface system options • Know and apply use zones around play equipment • Understand accessibility for children with mobility issues.
Section 6: Ranking Hazards
Begin self-paced component package.
Begin self-paced component package. After completing this unit, you should be able to: • Know and understand the different priority levels, consequences and actions needed to address hazards • Consider the probability, possibility and consequences when assessing hazard levels • Know and act on your responsibility as CPSI in relation to HIRA and non-standard equipment.
Section 7: Public Playground Risk Management
Begin self-paced component package.
Begin self-paced component package. After completing this unit, you should be able to: • Develop and formalize safety policies and procedures • Identify and appoint a Playground Safety Coordinator • Create general and site-specific files for record-keeping purposes • Understand how to perform a Comprehensive Compliance Inspection (Audit) • Understand how to perform regular inspections and maintenance • Know what to do in case of injury.
Section 8: Risk Reduction Exercises
Begin self-paced component package.
Begin self-paced component package. In the following exercises you will see a number of situations where you will need to use your professional judgement to determine the hazard priority and corrective action to determine how to deal with each one.
Section 9: Performing an Inspection
Begin self-paced component package.
Begin self-paced component package. In this section, you have the opportunity to watch CPSIs go through a playground inspection from start to finish.
