Who said writing a policy can’t be fun? Whether you are preparing to write a policy, procedure or plan for CAPRA Accreditation or for your own purposes, this presentation will guide you on your writing journey from the title page to appendices. Learn how to create a table of contents using styles in Microsoft Word, how to add signature block and other technical tips for document creation. Explore various methods for creating your content: How do you know what to include? What to change? What to delete altogether? When is it appropriate to use AI and when should you rely on other resources? We will explore the individual process I use for policy writing and tips I have learned through my experiences as a CAPRA Reviewer and content creator for numerous “P-words,” including a recreation program plan, policy manuals for state and volunteer boards, standard operating procedures and policies for the Town of Parker, numerous employee manuals, training documents, and other various written documents. Participants of all writing abilities will leave with a variety of practical tips and tools to create their own policy, procedure or plan. Can the “P” word be fun? Maybe...but can they be effective and useful? Definitely!
Learning Objectives:
1. Participants will learn how to use styles and create a table of contents in Microsoft Word and leave with recorded training for use in their daily operations.
2. Participants will explore key components of the documents required for CAPRA Accreditation.
3. Participants will identify at least three best practices for document creation.

Errin Koon
Recreation Manager
Programs Town of Parker
This session features Errin Koon, a recreation program manager with more than 16 years of increasing experience in parks and recreation. As a Certified Youth Sports Administrator, Koon learned the value a policy provides an organization, but more importantly, the participants they serve. She has served many roles within the Town of Parker (Colorado), including assistant facility coordinator, sports coordinator, sports supervisor and programs manager. Each role required the creation of a variety of policies, checklists, manuals, handbooks and procedures for front desk operations, the sports division, and department-wide operations. In 2021, she was awarded the Colorado President's Award for her contributions in policy and bylaw editing for the Colorado Parks and Recreation Association and Colorado Association of Recreational Athletics (CARA). Koon has served as a CAPRA Visitor on seven visits, reviewing countless policies, plans, procedures and programs. Her involvement as a reviewer provides a unique insight into effective, creative and successful agency documentation.
